As an International organization which started exchanging volunteers across the world with the aim to restore peace after WW2, ICYE Japan cannot but express deep disappointment over the current Kremlin's invasion of Ukraine.
Since we are not an expert of geopolitics, we do not know what will be the best option (sanctions, military intervention, etc.) to minimize the impact on innocent citizens living in Ukraine, Russia and countries around the area. However, we strongly believe attacking the opposition using weapons will not bring any solution to the upheavals.
We also believe that deepening the understanding of different cultures is essential to nurture respect for people with different values, which could be the first step when we talk about world peace and order. We also think this cannot be achieved just by being armchair travelers, and will thus keep sending/hosting volunteers worldwide given that safety is guaranteed.
With a hope to see a better future for all the people affected by the invasion, as well as for those whose lives are in constant danger but do not even get media attention anymore because the conflict/instability has become part of their ordinary lives,

私たちが日常的に享受していると感じている、平穏な日常というものがどれだけ貴重なものか、こういうことが起きるたびに思います。
国際秩序を完全に無視した暴力が、昨日までの日常を乱暴に奪っていくのを目の前にして、民主主義国家に生きる人たちができることは、平和的な外交戦略、経済制裁、国際的な非難にとどまります。（桃太郎みたいなことはできませんから、、、）
傲慢な暴力を前に、民主主義はたちまち弱くなり、虚しさが心に影を落とします。 世界で理不尽なことが起こるたびに、その虚しさを振り払い、思い出すのは私たちが「国際交流」をする意味です。
一人の人が国際ボランティア活動に参加し、多様な世界を身を以て体験し、自分もその世界の一員として生きる一人であることを認識する。（自分ごととして捉え）、そして「考動」して行くことが、国際社会をより良い方向へ導くことに繋がります。
それが、私たちが国際交流の仕事をする意味なのだと、改めて強く認識させられます。戦争という手段は、絶対にあってはいけない。
二度の世界大戦後に国際理解による国際平和の実現を願い、始まったICYEの思いは、７０年前もこれからも変わりません。
ウクライナ、そして周辺地域に一刻も安全が保障されることを切に願っています。
